About the Music

The anthem sung today by the Chancel Choir, “Anthem of Gratitude,” was given to the glory of God and in honor of the baptism of Caleb Joseph Bates by his parents, Mary and Kenn Bates.

Ralph Vaughan Williams is one of the important composers of the twentieth century, and dean of the English composers of his generation. His Five Mystical Songs includes four solos and one choral anthem set to the sacred poetry of George Herbert. Singing for the fi rst time for us today is Chancel Choir member Jeremy Stayton, a graduate of Bob Jones University in Vocal Performance. “Anthem of Gratitude” begins with a setting of “Now Thank We All Our God” and then gracefully concludes with new music for the familiar and beloved hymn “For the Beauty of the Earth.”
