The Chancel Choir with orchestra will present The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace on March 16, 2008, Palm Sunday evening, at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace will be a multi-media presentation that includes captivating footage of the preparation for war, the instruments of battle and the devastation of war to the established order of life. The concert is free to congregation and community.

The Armed Man is a 15th century melody so popular in its day that it was used as the basis for numerous mass settings by many of the important composers of that age. The text of the first verse is: “The Armed Man must be feared; Everywhere it has been decreed That everyman should arm himself With an iron coat of mail.” At the turn of the 21st century London’s oldest military museum, the Royal Armouries, decided to commission a new work that would look back to the most war-torn century in history and forward to the hope of a more peaceful new millennium. The Armed Man seemed to be a perfect fit for the project.

This is a profoundly moving work that melds the powerful music of Karl Jenkins with the all too real images taken from actual combat footage from the 20th century. Mr. Jenkins says of his work, “As I started composing “The Armed Man” the tragedy of Kosovo unfolded. I was reminded daily of the horror of such conflict and so I dedicate the work to the victims of Kosovo.” The first recording of the work ironically came out on September 10, 2001. As fellow English composer Benjamin Britten had done 40 years earlier in his War Requiem, Jenkins gathers texts from sacred and secular sources, including movements from the Mass, writers Mallory, Dryden, Swift, Tennyson, Kipling and the Hindu Mahabharata.
